Programs Offered at Mediation Services for Anoka County
The organization has increased the number of programs it offers and now provides mediators for: the community (neighbors, landlords and tenants, employees, schools, family communication, elder issues); Conciliation Court; Shared Parenting (post-divorce co-parenting issues); Restorative Justice (court-referred cases); Peaceful Alternatives Classes (a community or court-mandated program to help youth learn to make better choices).
Community mediation’s deal with disputes involving neighborhood conflicts which could involve just two or more neighbors or a large group, landlord and tenants, businesses and consumers, or families (please see “Shared Parenting Mediation” if the issue is a co-parenting issue). Community mediation’s are free to the public through Partnerships with cities and a grant through Anoka County. Mediation requires all parties to enter into a dialogue with good faith and a true desire to reach a mutually acceptable agreement.
Shared Parenting Mediation
Shared Parenting Mediations are for co-parenting issues after a divorce (we also serve parents that were never married). MSAC mediates only post-decree shared parenting issues for divorced or unmarried parents. Some of the co-parenting issues we help mediate are:
- Extracurricular Activities and Expenses
- Grandparent Time
- Parenting Concerns
- Parenting Time Schedules
- Post-divorce Property Issues
Mediation is a voluntary process that provides an opportunity for both parties to express and resolve issues which may be of concern to them. Mediation requires both parties to enter into a dialogue with good faith and a true desire to reach a mutually acceptable agreement.
Situations Where We Cannot Help**
Mediation Services for Anoka County would like to be able to help all parties who seek mediation. There are cases we cannot help with however, because we are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and receive some of our funding from the State of Minnesota. Mediation Services for Anoka County must adhere to State Statues and State requirements.
Under Minnesota State requirements and Statues, Mediation Services for Anoka County is unable to handle the following cases:
- Couples who are not divorced
- Never married couples who do not have a court determined parenting time schedule.
- Situations involving violence or abuse
- Changing the legal custody of a child
- Child support matters
We DO NOT handle divorce mediations, cases with vulnerable adults or cases where there is domestic violence. We DO NOT do Parent Expediting. The agreements are not legally binding. Parenting time and resources can be discussed but legal changes cannot occur without court action.
